Ambassador Kayode Are Presents Letter of Credence to President Trump

The Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Kayode Are, has officially resumed his diplomatic duties after presenting his Letter of Credence to President Donald Trump at the White House.

The ceremony included a formal guard of honour involving members of the U.S. armed forces, the State Department, and the National Security Council. Other ambassadors from South Africa, Chad, Chile, Yemen, Australia, and Kyrgyzstan also presented their credentials.

Ambassador Are is a retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army and a former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), now known as the Department of State Services (DSS). His posting was approved by President Bola Tinubu earlier this year.

His appointment is expected to bolster the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in areas of national security and intelligence sharing.

Sending a former DSS Director-General and retired Colonel to Washington is the most strategic diplomatic move Tinubu has made. Trump respects ‘strongman’ backgrounds and security veterans. This will make intelligence sharing between Abuja and the White House much smoother.

Correct.

People don’t realize how massive this profile is. Are didn’t just run the DSS; he was the longest-serving DG in its history under Obasanjo. Washington deals heavily in counter-terrorism partnerships, so having an expert on the ground is a huge advantage.
