Terrorists Strike Three Oyo Schools, Kill Teacher and Abduct Pupils

A wave of grief and panic has gripped Oyo State following a coordinated morning assault by heavily armed gunmen on three separate educational institutions in the rural border communities. Local security sources confirmed that a courageous schoolteacher was killed while attempting to shield his students, while an unspecified number of pupils and administrative staff were forcefully abducted into the surrounding forests.
Eyewitnesses reported that the terrorists stormed the schools on motorcycles, firing sporadically to disperse villagers before targeting the classrooms. The local vigilante group attempted a swift counter-offensive but was momentarily overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the attackers. The Oyo State Police Command has deployed tactical units, including the anti-kidnapping squad and drone surveillance teams, to track the fleeing bandits.
The affected schools were Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who cut short an official engagement, has condemned the attack as a barbaric assault on the future of the state. He assured families that the state government is pooling all available resources alongside the military to guarantee the safe and unconditional rescue of the abducted children. Emergency psychological support centers are also being set up for the surviving students and traumatized parents.
The incident has reignited the national conversation regarding the vulnerability of rural schools to opportunistic criminal elements outside the traditional North-West theater. Education advocates are demanding the immediate acceleration of the “Safe Schools Initiative” across all southwestern states. Communities near the affected areas have temporarily closed down schools as a precautionary safety measure.

Quote from JobberGirl on May 16, 2026, 10:43 amThis news is incredibly heartbreaking. Hearing about mass school abductions used to be something we only watched on TV happening in distant states, but seeing it hit southwestern communities in Oyo brings the terror right to our doorstep. The assistant headmaster, Mr. Adesiyan, who lost his life trying to protect those kids is a true national hero whose sacrifice must never be forgotten

Quote from Aisha_S on May 16, 2026, 10:46 amThe fact that these gunmen were able to strike Baptist Nursery and Primary in Yawota and the schools in Esiele simultaneously shows a terrifying level of coordination. They didn’t just stumble into these towns; they planned it. If our intelligence agencies didn’t see this coming, it means there is a massive blind spot in our regional security network.

Quote from KayodeK on May 16, 2026, 10:49 amGovernor Makinde cutting short his engagement and deploying drone surveillance is the right immediate response, but we need to see results, not just movement. These children and the Vice Principal, Mrs. Alamu Folawe, are currently somewhere in a forest. Every hour that passes reduces the chances of a clean rescue, so the tactical teams need to move with absolute urgency.

Quote from KemiK3 on May 16, 2026, 10:55 amThis is a wake-up call for the entire southern region. The theater of insecurity has shifted, and the opportunistic criminal elements have realized that rural schools in the south are soft targets with high ransom potential. We cannot afford to play politics with this; federal and state forces must coordinate without ego

Quote from Amina_A on May 16, 2026, 11:00 amThe security forum pointing out that the bandits are moving victims into the Old Oyo National Park is a massive clue. These vast, poorly governed forest corridors linking Oyo, Kwara, and Niger states have become a highway for criminals. If the military doesn’t establish permanent bases inside these national parks, they will just become permanent headquarters for kidnappers

Quote from Aisha_O on May 17, 2026, 4:05 amThe Safe Schools Initiative has been a beautiful document on paper for years, but the implementation on the ground is virtually non-existent in most rural areas. No perimeter fences, no alarm systems, no security presence. If this tragedy doesn’t force the southwest governors to aggressively fund school security, I don’t know what will
