Stepmother Arrested in Enugu for Allegedly Beating 9-Year-Old to Death

Tragedy struck in Enugu today as the State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a 34-year-old woman for the alleged murder of her 9-year-old stepdaughter. Preliminary investigations reveal that the child was subjected to severe physical abuse over a missing item of food, leading to internal injuries that eventually caused her death before she could reach the hospital.

The suspect, who is currently in police custody, has reportedly confessed to “disciplining” the child but claimed she did not intend to kill her. Neighbors, however, have come forward with accounts of long-term systematic abuse, stating that the child was frequently seen with bruises and was often denied food as a form of punishment.

The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has condemned the incident in the strongest terms, describing it as “a barbaric act that has no place in a modern society.” He has directed the Ministry of Gender Affairs to provide support to the family and to ensure that the case is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

This incident has reignited the national conversation on child protection and the implementation of the Child Rights Act across all states in Nigeria. Advocacy groups are calling for more stringent monitoring of “at-risk” households and a more robust reporting system for domestic violence to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.

Heartlessness resides in a woman

This is a very valid point. Nigeria needs this conversation.

The Governor’s condemnation is good, but we need ‘judicial speed.’ These cases usually drag on until we forget.

The ‘discipline’ excuse is the refuge of monsters. A 9-year-old killed over ‘missing food’? It’s demonic.

We need a national ‘Child Abuse Registry.’ People like this should never be allowed near children again.

Trauma is the silent killer in our society. This woman probably has her own issues, but that’s no excuse for murder.

Justice must be swift. We cannot keep ‘dialoguing’ with people who kill children in their care.

May the soul of that little girl find the peace she was denied on earth. This news ruined my morning.

It’s a failure of the extended family too. Where was the child’s father? How could he not see the signs of abuse?
