Officers of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested several suspects in connection with the looting of a truck that had fallen into a valley along the Calabar–Itu Highway. The incident occurred late Monday night, where individuals from neighboring communities reportedly converged to vandalize the vehicle and steal its tires and other mechanical parts. The police acted on a tip-off provided by a local tricycle operator.
Among those arrested is a 19-year-old native of Maiduguri who was found in possession of four stolen truck tires. Further investigations led to the arrest of the tricycle operator who was allegedly being used to transport the stolen goods from the accident scene. The police have emphasized that “opportunistic looting” during accidents is a criminal offense and will be dealt with severely.
The command praised the bravery of citizens who provide timely information to law enforcement. This arrest is being viewed as part of a larger effort to secure the state’s highways, which have seen a rise in “vandalism-style” crimes over the last year. The police have increased patrols in the Afaha community area, where the terrain often makes vehicles vulnerable to such accidents.
The recovered items have been taken into custody as evidence, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court once investigations are complete. Community leaders have been urged to educate their youths on the dangers and legal consequences of engaging in such criminal activities during emergencies.
