Who is Mohammed Hayatu-Deen? The Technocrat Entering the ADC Race

The 2027 presidential race took an unexpected turn this week with the entry of Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a renowned economist and banker, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primary. Hayatu-Deen surprised political observers by picking up the party’s N100 million nomination form, setting the stage for a potential showdown with veteran politician Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. While many younger voters are asking “Mohammed Who?”, his career in the corporate world is one of significant distinction.

Hayatu-Deen is best known for his 11-year tenure as the CEO of FSB International Bank Plc, where he was credited with turning around the struggling state-owned Federal Savings Bank. An alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the Harvard Business School, he rose to become the MD/CEO of the Northern Nigeria Development Corporation (NNDC) at the young age of 30. His four decades of experience in high-level finance and management have made him a respected figure among Nigeria’s economic and technocratic elite.

Despite his corporate pedigree, Hayatu-Deen is considered a “freshman” in the political arena. He briefly entered the 2023 PDP presidential primary but withdrew just days before the convention, citing the “obscene monetization” of the process. His return to the political stage under the ADC suggests he is looking for a platform where his technocratic approach might find more traction than in the larger, established parties that he previously criticized for their internal dynamics.

In recent media appearances, Hayatu-Deen has focused his platform on the link between insecurity and poverty, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He has argued that security must be treated with the same level of urgency as economic management, citing statistics that show over 100 million Nigerians living below the poverty line. While upsetting a heavyweight like Atiku within the ADC remains an uphill task, his candidacy introduces a new level of competition and focus on policy that many hope will enrich the upcoming electoral cycle.
