Season of Conspiracy Politics: The Shifting Loyalties of Peter Obi

Engagements with Chidi Amuta

The Nigerian political landscape is entering a “season of conspiracy,” characterized by surprising alliances and the sudden migration of key figures across party lines. Central to this narrative is Mr. Peter Obi, whose recent move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has sparked intense debate. Critics have accused Obi of “excessive ambition” and a lack of loyalty to the Labour Party, which served as his platform in the 2023 elections.

However, many political analysts argue that this reading is defective. Obi’s stature has grown to a point where his followership—the “Obidients”—will not accept him in any role other than as a presidential candidate. Joining a major party that would offer him anything less than the top ticket would be perceived as a betrayal of the movement. The NDC, a coalition of various smaller parties and pressure groups, appears to be the strategic vehicle Obi has chosen to challenge the APC/PDP duopoly.

The NDC’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term is a direct play to secure Obi’s candidacy while calming Northern anxieties. By promising to return power to the North in 2031, the party hopes to build a broad national consensus. This “principled” approach to power rotation is being contrasted with the more “transactional” politics of the two main parties, setting the stage for a unique ideological battle.

Despite the optimism in the Obi camp, the ruling APC has dismissed the NDC as a non-threat. Leaders like Governor Hope Uzodimma have characterized the new coalition as a group of “political orphans” who lack the structure and grassroots reach to win a national election. The coming months will determine whether Obi can translate his massive social media and urban followership into a viable electoral machine capable of navigating the complexities of Nigeria’s rural voting blocs.
