Sallah Price Shock: Ram and Cattle Costs Hit Record Highs Nationwide

As millions of Nigerian Muslim families celebrate Eid-el-Kabir today, a severe pricing crisis across major livestock markets has turned the traditional slaughtering of rams into an unaffordable luxury for average households.

Market surveys conducted across cattle depots in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano show that the average price of a medium-sized sacrificial ram has surged to N800,000, while larger bulls and cows are fetching between N2.5 million and N3.2 million.

Livestock traders have blamed the unprecedented pricing surge on astronomical transportation costs, diesel price hikes, and continuous security threats along primary agricultural trading corridors in northern Nigeria.

Faced with these severe realities, many families have resorted to cooperative purchasing schemes, pooling financial resources to buy a single cow to share among multiple households to keep tradition alive.

Let’s look at the economics. If a civil servant earns the minimum wage, it would take nearly a full year of zero spending just to afford a single medium-sized ram. The math is simply not mathing.
