Profiles of Six Startup Founders Who Closed Deals in April

While the total funding volume for April was modest at $4 million, the founders behind these deals represent the cutting edge of Nigerian innovation. Julian Flosbach, co-founder and CEO of Bfree, led the charge by securing $3.1 million. Bfree is tackling the sensitive issue of debt recovery in Africa’s digital lending space, using AI to manage non-performing loans in a more ethical and efficient manner.

In the agritech and food commerce space, Daniel Afolayan of Baskett secured $300,000. Afolayan, a Y Combinator alumnus, is leveraging his experience with previous ventures like Sendme to digitize food distribution. His focus is on solving the “last mile” problem of getting affordable groceries to consumers, a critical issue given the current inflationary pressures on food prices in Nigeria.

Other founders highlighted include Estelle Dogbo, co-founder of Biovana, who raised $200,000 for healthtech infrastructure, and Felix Daniel of NectarFi, who raised a similar amount for a stablecoin payment platform. Chinenye Nlemchi of Trashcoin and Tunde Elegba of Surgepay also closed deals worth $100,000 each. Nlemchi’s Trashcoin is particularly notable for its focus on environmental sustainability, a sector that is beginning to see increased “green” venture interest.

These founders share a common trait: they are building “high-utility” solutions rather than “nice-to-have” apps. In a tight funding market, these six individuals have managed to convince investors of their long-term viability. Their stories reflect the grit required to operate in one of the world’s most challenging environments, where infrastructure deficits and regulatory hurdles are the norm.
