Paris Pitch: Tinubu Courts Creditors as 2027 Looms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intensified his diplomatic and economic offensive in Paris, meeting with a consortium of international creditors and private equity firms. The mission, dubbed the “Paris Pitch,” is aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s debt profile and securing fresh foreign direct investment (FDI) ahead of the 2027 election cycle. The President emphasized that Nigeria’s “Renewed Hope” reforms are finally stabilizing the naira and creating a more predictable environment for global capital.

During a high-level roundtable, the President argued that the difficult fiscal adjustments made over the last three years—including the total removal of subsidies and the unification of exchange rates—have laid the foundation for sustainable growth. He urged the international community to view Nigeria not through the lens of short-term volatility but as a long-term strategic partner in Africa. Tinubu highlighted the infrastructure milestones in the power and rail sectors as evidence of his administration’s commitment to industrialization.

However, political analysts back home suggest that this late-term focus on external financing is a direct response to the domestic pressure caused by the rising cost of living. With the 2027 elections appearing on the horizon, the administration is desperate to trigger an economic rebound that trickles down to the average citizen. The “Paris Pitch” is seen as a gamble to buy time and fiscal space for more populist interventions in the final year of his first term.

The outcome of these talks is expected to influence the 2026 Supplementary Budget, which is currently being drafted by the Ministry of Finance and Coordinating Ministry of the Economy. Sources close to the Presidency suggest that a successful deal in Paris could lead to a significant boost in the social safety net programs. Critics, however, warn that increasing Nigeria’s debt burden, even for infrastructure, could lead to a sovereign debt crisis if the projected growth doesn’t materialize.
