N500bn fraud probe:EFCC detains Energy Commission DG

PreviousPage 2 of 2

If this money was invested in the ‘crude-for-naira’ or gas-to-power initiatives, the naira would be stronger by now. Corruption is the biggest inflation driver in Nigeria, not just ‘global market forces.’

The Energy Commission is supposed to be solving our solar and renewable needs, yet the only thing ‘renewable’ here seems to be the cycle of corruption. We are in 2026 and still fighting the same old demons of 1999.

The silence from the EFCC spokesperson is typical. They probably want to make sure their facts are airtight because a ₦500bn allegation is enough to shake the international investor confidence we’ve been trying to build.

We need to start talking about the death penalty for this level of economic sabotage. ₦500bn is not just ‘theft’; it’s a crime against the millions of Nigerians who are out of work because our energy sector is crippled.

Kudos to the whistleblowers or the investigators who flagged this. But detention is just the first step. Nigerians want to see a transparent trial and a full recovery of those funds to be used for actual energy projects in rural areas.

This is a big test for the Tinubu administration’s anti-corruption stance. Since he appointed Abdullahi in 2023, he must ensure that the law takes its full course without any political interference, regardless of who the DG knows in Aso Rock.
