The security situation in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, took a grim turn over the weekend following coordinated attacks on several communities that left at least seven people dead, including a police officer. The assaults, reportedly carried out by heavily armed gunmen, occurred late Saturday night across Sabon Layi, Rakung, Gangare, and areas near the General Hospital in Zat and Bet. Several other residents sustained varying degrees of injuries during the rampage, which has once again plunged the region into mourning.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM-A), in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, expressed deep frustration over what it termed “consistent security failure.” The group pointed out that these attacks happened despite the presence of multiple security checkpoints and personnel stationed within Barkin Ladi town. They lamented that bodies were still being recovered in the early hours of Sunday morning, with many survivors now fighting for their lives in local medical facilities.
Adding to the outrage, the association issued a vote of no confidence in some personnel of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), accusing them of negligence. The group alleged that armed attackers are often allowed to move freely across communities in broad daylight and at night without any swift or effective intervention from security agencies. This perceived lack of protection has left residents in a state of constant fear, unable to carry out their daily activities or farming without the threat of violence.
Furthermore, humanitarian advocates like Dr. Solomon Chollom have criticized the Plateau State Government for its “weak humanitarian response” to the recurring violence. Chollom, a virologist and President of the Plateau State Association UK, highlighted the undignified manner in which residents are forced to evacuate corpses themselves, often using bare hands and local cloths due to the absence of professional emergency services. He called for the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Homeland Security and Disaster Management to provide a frontline response to these frequent crises.
