ECOWAS Commission Vows to Fight Deepfakes Ahead of 2027

The ECOWAS Commission has launched a new initiative to safeguard the integrity of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria by combating the spread of AI-generated “deepfakes” and disinformation. At a regional summit in Lagos, officials warned that the misuse of artificial intelligence poses a direct threat to democratic stability. The commission intends to partner with technology companies and media organizations to identify and neutralize malicious content.

The initiative includes a regional training program for journalists and election observers on how to verify digital content. By fostering a “culture of fact-checking,” ECOWAS hopes to reduce the impact of coordinated disinformation campaigns that often target the reputation of electoral bodies and political candidates. The commission highlighted that the digital space must be a platform for debate rather than a battleground for deception.

In addition to training, the commission is advocating for the harmonization of digital laws across West Africa. This would allow for better cooperation in tracking the sources of large-scale disinformation campaigns that originate from outside the region. Regulators from various member states discussed the possibility of creating a regional “Information Integrity Task Force.”

Stakeholders at the summit emphasized that the fight against deepfakes is not just a technological challenge but a social one. There is a strong focus on public education, encouraging citizens to be skeptical of unverified social media posts and to rely on credible news sources. The goal is to build a resilient electorate that is less susceptible to manipulation by digital misinformation.
