Top scorer in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Owoeye Jesudunsin has attributed her feat to a combination of discipline, strategic preparation, consistency, positivity and God’s grace.
Speaking exclusively with The PUNCH, 16-year-old Owoeye unveiled her strategies, including adopting a topic-by-topic study method, intensive past question practice, tutorials, use of online materials and accessing Computer-Based Test platforms.
JAMB on Monday declared Owoeye as the highest scorer in the 2026 UTME with 372 marks out of a possible 400.
Owoeye, who sat the examination in Ogun State and hails from Ekiti State, applied to study Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Lagos.
Owoeye stressed that the achievement didn’t come without adequate preparation, among other factors.
She said, “First was the grace of God, which I believe played the biggest role throughout my preparation and examination journey.
“Consistency, discipline, strategic preparation, and a positive mindset also contributed greatly to my performance.
I adopted a topic-by-topic study method, combined concept learning with intensive past question practice, and made use of resources such as JAMB Series Remix, Prep50, CBT platforms, online materials, and DailyEd Online Tutorials.”
While preparing for the exam, Owoeye set for herself a target score of 370 marks, expressing gladness that she met and surpassed her target.
“I knew I wanted to score very high because the course I intend to study, Medicine and Surgery, is highly competitive. I set a target score of 370 or above. Yes, my UTME score met my target.
She also noted that her success was a result of sacrifices and depriving herself of comfort and fun.
“There were sacrifices I made during the process. I had to sacrifice a lot of comfort, leisure, and entertainment to remain focused on my studies.”
During exam preparation, she noted that she faced moments when she felt tired and discouraged. However, “I kept pushing through resilience, determination, and discipline,” she said.
She explained that she chose the University of Lagos for its “reputation for academic excellence and the quality of medical education it offers.”
Owoeye emphasised that her desire to become a medical doctor was to impact people’s lives through the provision of healthcare.
“Beyond becoming a doctor, I hope to contribute meaningfully to society by helping people, relieving suffering, and supporting the less privileged. “I also hope to be involved in humanitarian and community development efforts, especially initiatives that support vulnerable children and improve people’s quality of life,” she added.
Furthermore, Owoeye highlighted the support of her school, teachers and mentors throughout her academic journey.
She said, “My family, school, teachers, and mentors also played important roles by encouraging and supporting me throughout the journey. EFVP Wisdom Spring Model School contributed greatly to my academic foundation, while DailyEd Online Tutorials made my preparation more structured and organised.”
Others who came behind Owoeye in the 2026 UTME were Enwere Ikenna from Imo State, who scored 370 and applied to Nile University of Nigeria to study Computer Science.
