Abuja to Host Africa’s First-Ever Playback Theatre Festival in June

Abuja has been selected as the host city for Africa’s first-ever Playback Theatre Festival, scheduled to take place this June. Playback theatre is an interactive form of improvisational theatre where audience members tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted on the spot. The festival is expected to attract performers and practitioners from across the continent and the world.

The event, themed “Stories that Bind Us,” aims to promote social healing and community building through the power of shared narratives. Organizers stated that the festival will feature a week of workshops, live performances, and cultural exchange programs. It provides a unique platform for Nigerians to explore their personal and collective histories in a creative and supportive environment.

Key organizers highlighted that playback theatre has been used globally for conflict resolution and trauma recovery. By bringing this festival to Nigeria, they hope to introduce more people to the therapeutic and educational potential of the art form. The event is supported by various international arts organizations and local cultural partners.

Registration for the festival is already open, and early interest suggests a diverse turnout of artists, educators, and social workers. The festival is expected to significantly boost the local arts scene and establish Abuja as a hub for innovative theatrical practices in Africa.
