A tragic road accident on the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the lives of 11 people. The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle which reportedly somersaulted multiple times before plunging off the bridge into a ravine. The accident occurred late Sunday night, and emergency responders spent hours at the scene attempting to recover the victims.
According to a statement from the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), all 11 occupants—comprising 10 adult males and one adult female—died on impact. The doors of the vehicle were reportedly locked upon impact, trapping the passengers inside. FRSC personnel, with the assistance of members of the local community, had to dismantle the wreckage to retrieve the remains.
The bodies of the victims have since been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo. Preliminary investigations by the FRSC cite driving under the influence of alcohol and overloading as the probable causes of the crash. The vehicle was reportedly carrying a number of passengers that exceeded its safety capacity, making it difficult for the driver to maintain control.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and issued a stern warning to motorists. He emphasized the dangers of night travel and urged drivers to strictly adhere to speed limits and avoid the use of intoxicants while behind the wheel. The accident is one of several fatal crashes reported on the highway in recent weeks.
