Lagos Unveils Ambitious Plans for Commercial Biogas Production

In a move toward sustainable energy and waste management, the Lagos State Government has unveiled its blueprint for the commercial production of biogas. The project aims to convert the thousands of tons of organic waste generated daily in the city into clean energy for industrial use and domestic cooking, significantly reducing the state’s carbon footprint.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources stated that the first phase of the project will involve the construction of “mega-digesters” at the Olusosun landfill and other major dumpsites. These facilities will be operated through public-private partnerships, with several international energy firms already showing interest in the “waste-to-wealth” initiative.

Lagos produces over 13,000 metric tons of waste daily, a significant portion of which is biodegradable. By harnessing this resource, the state hopes to provide a cheaper alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and reduce the environmental hazards associated with open-air landfills, such as methane emissions and groundwater contamination.

The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs in the waste collection and energy distribution sectors. If successful, Lagos will become the first state in Nigeria to implement a large-scale commercial biogas system, providing a model for other urban centers across Africa struggling with waste management and energy poverty.

Sanwo-Olu is trying, but the ‘implementation’ of Lagos projects is where the problem is. Remember the ‘Blue Line’ delays?

If this can lower the price of cooking gas, then every Lagosian will support it. LPG is now for the ‘one percent’.

Imagine the number of ‘Area Boys’ that can be employed in the waste collection value chain. This is a social project too.

Waste-to-wealth is the only way to save Lagos from the Olusosun smell. That place is a ticking environmental time bomb.

Methane is a more ‘potent’ greenhouse gas than CO2. This is a big win for Nigeria’s climate change commitments.

Public-private partnership (PPP) is the right model. Government alone cannot manage ‘mega-digesters’.
